Featured Quilt - Second Place Pictorial-Small at Houston 2024

Bremen Town Musicians by Kestrel Michaud won Second Place - Pictorial-Small (Sponsored by AllBrands.com) at Houston International Quilt Festival 2024. Always one to know how to set the scene in her quilt, this time Kestrel's quilt was inspired by one of her favorite childhood stories. She says, “This is my artistic take on the Grimm Fairytales story, 'Town Musicians of Bremen.' This fairytale was my favorite as a kid. I loved how the animals won and scared the thieves away from the house. Animals are real-life underdogs, but in this story, they definitely came out on top.”

One of America’s Oldest Quilts Is Found in Clay County, Minnesota

You Find The Most Amazing Things Where You Least Expect Them

You never know where things are going to turn up. One day you put a box in the attic, then it gets moved to the basement, then to a friend's house and so on. That's kind of what happened in Clay County, Minnesota, where a quilt donated to the Ulen Museum turned out to be one of America's oldest quilts, older than the country itself. Find out more about this amazing discovery of American History.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Don't Let It "Melt" Away

"Quilt Melt" by Lorraine Woodruff-Long

Quilt Melt is a commentary quilt that Lorraine made as a way to reflect on climate change. She says, "Quilt Melt illustrates melting of the ice caps through formal and familiar traditional quilt blocks (current coast areas) contrasted with the unexpected fluidity and change of a surrealist melting appliqué (melting ice caps.)"

See more of Lorraine's quilts in How to Do an Improv Mosaic Scrappy Log Cabin, Use Text in Quilts, and Reimagine Shirting with Lorraine Woodruff-Long.
