Featured Quilt - "G"oodness Gracious, the Seventh Quilt In Janet Stone's Alphabet Series Is A Masterpiece Quilt!
Today we continue with our presentation of the quilts in Janet Stone's Alphabet series, currently hanging in the National Quilt Museum as part of her exhibit, Janet Stone: And Now I Know My ABCs!. Janet tells us that "each quilt contains the entire alphabet, not just a specific letter."
The seventh quilt is Red Letter Daze, and it won Janet, in her own words, "a REAL Best in Show at MQX East." She says, "This quilt was inspired by an antique Quaker cross stitch sampler I had stitched. I drew the layout on graph paper and because of the way I wanted the layout to be, with the blocks on point, I decided it would be easier to make the blocks separately and then appliqué them onto the background. I didn't quilt them separately, the entire quilt was assembled and then quilted. When it came to the outer scroll border and the letters, I used the same free motion embroidery technique I had used for my second quilt, "Alpha Block Celebration". Hotfix crystals, embellishments, and couched metallic cords were used."
Janet's quilts in the series have been collected and presented together in her most recent book, Mutton But Letters!, which is available to purchase in her Etsy shop or in the gift shop of The National Quilt Museum.
And a fun fact from Janet about this quilt: "This quilt was awarded the Masterpiece Quilt Award in 2012 by The National Quilt Association."

Victoria and Albert Museum: Eileen Agar's Surrealist Glove Hat |
"What Happens When Surrealist Art Collides with 1930s Couture?"
From the Victoria and Albert Museum: "See the Surrealist Glove Hat created by British artist Eileen Agar — a striking work that blurs the boundaries between art, fashion and wearable sculpture. Inspired by legendary fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, Agar transformed an ordinary straw hat using leather gloves and an ammonite fossil brooch, creating one of the most unusual objects associated with British Surrealist fashion." |

Exploring The History of the Quilters' Save Our Stories (QSOS) Project
Presented by the Quilt Alliance: "If your favorite quilt could talk, what would it say? In a world of volatile social media platforms and endless scrolling, how do we make sure the stories behind our quilts survive? For more than 25 years, Quilters' Save Our Stories (QSOS) has been preserving the voices of quiltmakers through recorded oral history interviews. These stories aren't buried in a feed, they're archived for future generations, ensuring that the makers remain connected to their work and their place in history. Join Quilt Alliance QSOS Program Manager, Emma Parker, and Interim Executive Director, Nellie Wu, for a special Textile Talk exploring this remarkable project and why it matters now more than ever."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A "Five-Star" Jelly Roll Quilt |
"Five-Star Experience" by Michelle Cain
Michelle has a background in publishing, and has had many friends who have had books published over the years. Feeling like it was now her time after publishing and selling stand alone patterns for years, Michelle started to really gravitate toward creating a collection of designs that she herself would publish. This became her book, Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts, which collects Jelly Roll quilts that don't always look like Jelly Roll Quilts. Five-Star Experience is a part of that collection, AND graces the cover of the book. And while Michelle says that some may be able to distinguish that Five-Star Experience was constructed using Jelly Rolls, she says that there are other quilts in the book that you would be surprised were made using 2.5 inch strips.

So Many Things To Try
Jelly Rolls are great because they provide you with many different pieces of fabric to add and incorporate into a variety of projects you may want to work on. You could say that we here at The Quilt Show are like a Jelly Roll, with many different shows for you to watch and expand your quilting knowledge. But while a Jelly Roll on average provides you with around 40 fabrics, The Quilt Show has close to 500 SHOWS for you to enjoy, with the ability to experience the teachings of hundreds of the best quilting teachers in the world. So while we don't come as neatly packaged as a Jelly Roll, we do come packed to the gills with everything you'd want to know about quilting and more! |
