"Halo Medallion" in Top 5 for Best of Show

Here at The Quilt Show we've always known that our Block Of the Month quilts were award winners, but for some they are ACTUAL award winners.

The Quilt Show member Joyce Drenth entered her Sue Garman Halo Medallion quilt, which she called Hallelujah, into a show and it "was judged to be in the top 5 quilts for Best of Show!!"

See what Joyce had to say to Alex about her BOM journey and the other quilt that she had in Best of Show contention. See photos of both of her quilts after her story.

"Hi, Alex,

I love all your videos and quilts you are leading us through. Thank you for all your inspiration.

I just was so tickled on Monday to hear that my Sue Garman Halo Medallion was judged to be in the top 5 quilts for Best of Show!!

Since I loved the BOM and enjoyed stitching it through membership at TQS, I thought you would be interested in it’s being showcased daily at the Sewing Machines Plus Virtual Quilt Fest.

I was also blessed with both of my quilts being selected for Best of Show contention. My second quilt is Bucket List. Here is its developmental story:

In response to my guild’s challenge for our ‘TIME FLIES’ quilt show, I designed Bucket List in EQ8.

Using my patterns from EQ, I paper pieced it and added embellishments.

I photographed my quilts and resized the pictures to fit into the 40 wedges.

I chronologically documented the quilt style and completion date on ‘flying geese’ for each quilt.

Some embellishments are: 3-D flying geese, bucket, pin cushion, strawberry, shoe and scissors.

40 Ruby prairie points celebrate my guild’s, NSQG, 40th anniversary year.

The 4 o'clock charms and the scissor hands reflect the 4 decades of our guild's existence.

My bucket, shoe and pincushion were sewn separately and appliqued for a 3D effect.

This quilt serves as a documentation of my quilting journey through time so that pictures of my quilts are captured in one place. It also keeps my 'goals' spilling from the bucket front and center for the future. May my ruby shoe delay kicking my bucket!

Bucket List might be the most original quilt I have ever seen! So many different ideas and techniques...one could gaze at it for days.

Thank you to all your kind comments.

Both quilts were labors of love. After finishing Hallelujah's piecing according to the BOM timeframe, it took me a year to decide upon and design the quilting. Executing that took me a long time due to my longarm refusing to behave and the addition of all the tiny seed beads.. This is the reason for its naming. After 2 years it truly was a 'Hallelujah' moment.

With respect to my Bucket List quilt, my spark of inspiration came while thinking vs sleeping in bed. Isn't that when many people latch onto creative ideas? Remembering these ideas upon awakening is the difficulty. 'Flying geese and quilt photographs around the clock face fortunately stayed in my mind for future planning and execution.

Both are wonderful. Love The Bucket List. So inventive and beautifully executed. Plus the 3-D effect is so whimsical. What a great job.

"Hallelujah" is gorgeous, but "Bucket List" is spectacular. Fabulous design and execution. The highest compliment I can give? It's: "I wish I had made that."
