The Top 10 Modern Bridges to Inspire Quilters - The Banpo Bridge

Continuing with a selection of Modern Bridges to inspire your quilting creativity, Captn' John has selected the magnificent Banpo Bridge in South Korea. The Banpo Bridge, also known as the Banpodaegyo Bridge, is a treasured landmark located in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. Captn' John feels this bridge celebrates color and embellishment. It also seems to highlight the contrast between traditional and modern quilting in that it was inspired by the harmony between nature and urban life.

Here is why the  Banpo Bridge in South Korea will inspire quilters:

"We continue our review of Modern Bridges for Quilters with a bridge that celebrates color and embellishment.

This architectural marvel spans the Han River, connecting the districts of Seocho and Yongsan. Its construction began on August 11, 1980, and was completed on November 29, 1982.

Designed by the renowned South Korean architect, Kang Tae-wook, the Banpo Bridge was inspired by the concept of harmony between nature and urban life. The design philosophy behind this iconic structure was to create a bridge that seamlessly blends with its surroundings while also serving as a symbol of modernity and progress.

The Banpo Bridge is not only a functional transportation route but also a breathtaking spectacle of lights and water. The bridge is adorned with a total of 380 water jets on both sides, which shoot out water in a synchronized manner, creating a mesmerizing cascade effect. At night, these water jets transform into a vibrant display of dancing fountains, illuminated by colorful LED lights. This enchanting water fountain show is the longest bridge fountain in the world, stretching over 1.4 kilometers.

The construction cost of the Banpo Bridge amounted to approximately 22.8 billion Korean won, which is roughly equivalent to 20 million US dollars. Despite its hefty price tag, the bridge has become an iconic symbol of Seoul and a major tourist attraction.

As for some fun facts about the Banpo Bridge, it was featured in the popular South Korean drama series, "My Love from the Star". The bridge served as a backdrop for several romantic scenes between the lead characters, solidifying its status as a romantic destination."

Stay tuned and come back next week to find out the next Modern Bridge that will inspire quilters.
