Description:
Artist Statement: "What an honor it was for me to create this quilt of our first Black congressman as a visual Black History teaching moment. Using the public domain image from the Library of Congress, I hope to enlighten individuals who are unaware. Due to segregation laws, our presence in Congress unjustly came to a halt in 1901. We did not regain our rightful place in Congress until 1928. This brought about a new sense of hope, albeit an arduous journey forward!"
Techniques: Machine Pieced, Appliquéd, and Quilted; Fused Appliqué; Hand Embellished, Dyed, and Painted
