Description:

Artist Statement: "Inspired by the news of 215 unmarked graves of indigenous children at an Indian residential school in Canada. "215 little spirits represent the start of the horrific discoveries at just one of the 139 Indian Residential Schools. Buttons on the orange crosses represent the unknown number of our little ancestors not yet found at other schools. The ones going through the smoke hole represent the journey we all take to Lax Ha' (the sky) when we pass on. Walk on, walk on, walk on the breath of our grandfathers. This is how we honour those who have passed." Cindy JensenFisk, Gitx'san. You'll see 215 teardrops stitched on the dark grey paddles along with 215 vintage shell buttons placed throughout."

Thank you very much for your lovely and heartfelt comments. We truly enjoy and appreciate anytime Little Spirits is shared. Thanks to The Quilt Show for featuring our quilt this month.

We are now awaiting for “Little Spirits” to be returned from the Quiltcon show in Phoenix. Unfortunately, it is currently lost and the MQG is working to locate the quilt and return it to us here in Canada. The quilt is scheduled for display at the Quilt Canada show in Vancouver this June. Many of the residential schools were located in British Columbia and it is extra meaningful that Little Spirits was selected to be included into this show.

Let’s hope the “Little Spirits” has completed its US tour and can come home now. ?

This represents the unspeakable, murder of innocent children. This genocide was unspeakable but now rightfully brought into the light and talked about so it will never happen again. This quilt is such a gentle way of being an honoring memorial....

This represents the unspeakable, murder of innocent children. This genocide was unspeakable but now rightfully brought into the light and talked about so it will never happen again. This quilt is such a gentle way of being an honoring memorial. It does not return the children but it serves to show the fact that they nonethe less went straight to heaven which is the place of no pain, no tears, perfect peace and welcoming arms of Jesus and the relatives. A happy ending. I hope this quilt will travel all over the world where its story can be told. Beautiful design and colors and perfect balance.

Thank you for the eye-opening story behind this stunningly haunting quilt. I was ignorant of the horrors that so many Native American children experienced in residential schools in North America over at least a century. An easily found online episode of 60 Minutes aired in February 2022. It presents a heartbreaking and terrifying exposure of this shameful policy perpetrated by both Canada and the United States. May we all experience healing.

I really liked this quilt at first sight but also felt a little uncomfortable the more I looked at it. Then I read the story of it's inspiration and understood the effect it was having. What a powerful, passionate quilt this is, with the story...

I really liked this quilt at first sight but also felt a little uncomfortable the more I looked at it. Then I read the story of it's inspiration and understood the effect it was having. What a powerful, passionate quilt this is, with the story and all those little lives coming through from every part of it, so palpable...so sad. I couldn't talk about for quite awhile, I was so moved.
