Description:
Of the many quilts exhibited as part of Bisa Butler's The World is Yours exhibit at the Jeffrey Deitch Gallery in New York City, several have subjects and titles tied to hip-hop. One of the standout pieces of the exhibit tied to this theme is her almost 10-foot-tall portrait quilt of hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa and DJ Spinderella entitled Hot, Cool and Vicious. Named after their first album, and using a 1987 photograph by Janette Beckman as its basis, Bisa's quilt exudes cool and features a varied and vibrant color palette depicting the three in front of a reflective background with their lyrics quilted into it.
