Description:

Artist Statement: "This 360, double-sided, FPP, Quilt of DC Lamphere's "Dignity" Statue, is a tribute to the fortitude of Indigenous Peoples of this land. "Dignity" stands as a sentinel, urging us with outstretched hands, wrapped in the powerful symbolism of a lone star quilt, to engage with each other and the world around us with respect, unity and honor. "Dignity" stands as a reminder of our responsibility to each other and to the land we call home."

 

Techniques Used: Mahcine Pieced, Machine Quilted on a Frame (Longarm), Foundation Paper Pieced Front and Back

This is an unbelievable work of art that hopefully one day will be housed in a museum. Congratulations to the artist. I would like to complete Dignity’s story. Dignity is a 50 ft sculpture that sits on a very high bluff overlooking the Missouri River, on I-90 by Chamberlain SD. Designed by SD artist Dale Lamphere and gifted to the state by a Rapid City couple, Dignity also represents how the Star quilt pattern became a symbol of the Native American women in South Dakota and how it continues to be a very important part of their daily lives. Please research “Dignity of Earth and Sky” and. History of SD Star Quilt for more information. Again, congratulations to the artist.
