Featured Quilt - Outstanding Abstract Design at Road to California 2025

Balance by Lys Axelson won Outstanding Abstract Design (Sponsored by Baby Lock) at Road to California 2025. Lys says about her quilt, "#1 in a series, “From Earth to Sky”, that explores the complexity of the Natural World. This work embraces the intricate relationship each element, living and non-living, has with one another. The California Mountain Kingsnake demonstrates the delicate balance that constantly evolves to maintain harmony for all."

Building A Self-Portrait with Lynn Czaban

Make Preparing and Perfecting a Portrait Quilt a Piece of Cake

Lynn Czaban begins her first demonstration in our new show by explaining what to look for when selecting an image for a self-portrait. She then offers suggestions for selecting fabric, emphasizing how variations in value—particularly in skin tones and hair—are essential to achieving a realistic effect. Next, she demonstrates how to appliqué the face onto a background, and shows how to bring the portrait to life by adding subtle details like wrinkles, smile lines, and other small touches that infuse the work with personality and realism.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Fun Time with a Fish

"Key-Fetti Fish" by Cheryl Lynch

Key-Fetti Fish was such a popular quilt for Cheryl that she eventually turned it into a pattern. It was inspired by her time spent during part of the Winter in Key West, hence the title. Being in Key West completely changed her color palette, inspiring her to incorporate much brighter colors into her work.
