Featured Quilt - Lisa Ellis' Judge's Choice Award at Houston 2024

Last week we featured an interview with Lisa Ellis discussing why she chose Tetiana Bohachuk's quilt, Millstones, as the recipient of her Judge's Choice Award (Sponsored by Bohin France) at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2024. Today, we are showing you the quilt in all its grandeur and glory with spectacular close-ups and detail shots.

Here is the full story of the quilt and its beautiful inspiration from Tetiana herself, "Inspired by Vasyl Symonenko's poem, "Millstones," my quilt embodies the resilience of the Ukranians. Millstones are reflected in Ukranian folk motifs, symbolizing endurance through the 20th century's trials. Crafted with care, they honor hard work and kinship across generations. Each patch tells a story of beauty, echoing the spirit of my resilient people."

After viewing the quilt in closer detail, watch Lisa's interview again to get her insight and a judge's perspective on an amazing quilt.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Let the Dice Do the Talking

"100 Days of Dice Doodles" by Mel Beach

100 Days of Dice Doodles was Mel Beach's way of giving herself a creative challenge every day. This was her second 100 Day Project and involved Mel rolling one die each day to determine a source of inspiration for free-motion quilting a 4” square. Each number corresponded to the following inspiration: 1 = Photo, 2 = Music, 3 = Text, 4 = Events, 5 = Memories, and 6 = Artist’s Choice. For 100 days of work, Mel has certainly made a lifetime's worth of memories from making this quilt.

Love Mel's work? Want to see how she block prints her quilts? See how she does it by watching her in Ice Dyeing with Lynn Koolish, Lattice Blocks with Sujata Shah, Block Prints with Mel Beach, Fabric Books with Pati Fried.
