Featured Quilt - Third Place Machine Quilting at Houston 2024

Dream Flower by Sachiko Sasakura won Third Place - Machine Quilting (Sponsored by BERNINA) at Houston International Quilt Festival 2024. Sachiko says of her machine quilted marvel, “This quilt was inspired by the ranma-e (picture) of the Hyakudan Staircase, a tangible cultural property designated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The silk fabric used is from the kimono my daughter and I wore for our coming-of-age ceremonies.”

Lorraine Woodruff-Long Debuts with Tons of Talent

Color, Improvisation, Text, and Repurposed Fabrics, Oh My!

Meet Lorraine Woodruff-Long, a San Francisco fiber artist and quilter known for her vibrant use of color, improvisation, text, and repurposed fabrics. Her perspective on the world shifted after serving in the Peace Corps, leading her to fall in love with an urban city she called home for over twenty years. As a curious and resourceful artist, Lorraine primarily uses solid cottons, upcycled clothing, and thrift store finds in her quilts, occasionally sourcing from her husband's closet. She views quilts as a canvas for expression, often incorporating thought-provoking text to highlight topics she finds important.

Watch Lorraine in How to Do an Improv Mosaic Scrappy Log Cabin, Use Text in Quilts, and Reimagine Shirting with Lorraine Woodruff-Long, which debuts today!
