Featured Quilt - Outstanding Machine Quilting Frame at Road to California 2025

Adventures of Aquamarine & Amethyst by Margaret Solomon Gunn won Outstanding Machine Quilting Frame (Sponsored by Sewing Machines Plus) at Road to California 2025. This quilt was a long gestating project for Margaret and was featured at last year's Pacific International Quilt Festival. Margaret says of her work, "Started in 2016, this quilt explores how fussy-cutting the same bold-print fabrics can create completely different mandalas. They are set on hand-dyed lavender silk, a trademark of mine, and finished with hand-guided longarm quilting. My quilting style has changed significantly since this quilt was started, explaining the many years it hibernated in a box before it was finished."

Start Your February BOM Project A Day Early

The Month 2 patterns for the 2025 Block Of the Month, Laurel Ridge designed by Lynn Wilder, are now available for you to download. There are two colorways for this year's BOM, Grandmother's Autumn and Granddaughter's Spring. If you purchased either of these kits, make sure to download the pattern that goes with the appropriate colorway as they do differ because of the fabrics being used. If you are using your own fabrics, we recommend that you download the patterns from the Grandmother's Autumn colorway to use as your guide.

This month you will be making Small Appliqué blocks. In Lynn's video she shows you how to use either the starch method or the raw-edge method of appliqué.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Melded Photograph

"Continuing the Conversation" by Wen Redmond

Wen created Continuing the Conversation for a SAQA exhibit. It is what she calls a melded photograph, which means Wen started taking photographs of her own work and melded those together with more photographs of her painted fabric. It is entirely quilted with free consciousness like a poem. Wen liked the idea of not outlining the actual objects, but bringing it to life graphically with free motion quilting.
