Featured Quilt - Getting Ready for a "Modern" Winter

Modern Minimalist Snowflake by Shelley Koss was featured as part of the Modern Quilts - A Twist on Tradition Exhibit (Sponsored by Wonderfil Specialty Threads) at Houston International Quilt Festival 2024. A negative space quilt that's perfect for the upcoming Winter season, Shelley took a traditional design that you may have seen before and modernized it.

She says, "Inspired by the Amish Star quilts that used many different types of printed fabric to make a star, I turned the idea on its modern head to simplify it. I used red modern fussy-cut fabrics designed to enhance the stark white minimalist background. The red piecing is much smaller than traditional star-patterned quilts, lending volumes of negative space for the free-motion quilting to create beautiful shadow lines. The red fabric is purposefully not quilted, breaking traditional rules."

Barbara Black LIVE: "Pick a Petal" - Month 12

How to Quilt It?

Join Barbara Black as she talks about how Jen Kingwell quilted Pick a Petal, The Quilt Show's 2024 Block Of the Month. She also offers some additional ideas on how you can quilt it. It is a busy quilt and presents both challenges and opportunities. How would you approach the quilting design?

Barbara is LIVE TODAY, December 6, 2024 @ 10am PST, 1pm EST, and 6pm London time. All classes are recorded so they can be viewed later.

PLEASE NOTE: After December 31, 2024 The Quilt Show will no longer be able to provide you the patterns for Pick a Petal. We strongly recommend downloading all of the patterns before then to avoid any issues that might arise after the first of the year. To make this easier for you, we have a single convenient file that contains all 12 months' patterns.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Stupendous Skill Builder

"Charleston Carriage" by Lee Chappell Monroe

Charleston Carriage is a quilt that Lee designed specifically to teach the students she has been working with for many, many years. It was made for her students to help develop their skills, including choosing what fabrics to use, picking their palettes, and then learning the skills they want to develop. She says, "It draws on appliqué, patchwork and foundation piecing. It puts the piecer in the driver’s seat to create their own layout using the many options in the pattern."
