Fairs, Frakturs, Fylfots, & Favorites
In this episode, we have SEVEN Know-It-Alls. Seven?! YES! We have a very special guest: Alex Anderson of The Quilt Show!
Debby talks about 19th-century friendship quilts with Fraktur lettering, a Germanic calligraphy style of writing.
Julie discusses the use of the swastika motif (called a "fylfot" in Pennsylvania German design) in 19th-century and early 20th-century quilts. She brings us some context about the fylfot as an ancient symbol with positive meaning in many global traditions prior to World War II.
Alex talks about honoring makers who came before, and she tells us about how her examination of late-19th-century scrappy quilts led her down new paths in her own quilt-making journey.
Merikay tells us about the discovery of the two 1933 Sears contest quilts that are included in the Fabric of a Nation exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (on view through January 17, 2022).
ALL the Know-It-Alls weigh in on these topics for another lively and informative conversation.
The recording is sent out 48 hours after the premiere. Ticket holders enjoy lifetime access with the recording -- watch as often as you want after that!
