This testing doesn't appear rigorous. A helpful testing starts with an array of brands, justified by stated criteria, and compares the brands across the stated criteria.

I certainly would not go to a magazine known for short stories and witty cartoons for sewing machine advice!! I'm surprised they even know what a sewing machine is

I don’t know how anyone can yeah or nay a particular brand unless they have actually used all the brands enough to make a fair and honest evaluation. Just because I have a particular brand that I am happy with does not give me license to judge...

I think that the BERNINA and Janome have one of the best sewing stitches but I personally do not like either brand for embroidery. In fact I traded my BERNINA combo for a Brother Luminaire. I have a Pfaff 720 Expression for all my sewing because I love the IDT system. That being said I was not impressed with the embroidery on the Pfaff and traded my Performance Pro for a Dream Machine 2.

I have a Janome's and two BERNINA's. Hands down I love my two BERNINA's. I have a 750 and a 480, both fantastic machines. Yes, I do have a Janome as well, it lives in its caring bag and I use it exclusively for going to guild sewing events. And it is an OK machine, but those two BERNINA's are the best. Oh yes, they are more expensive, but so much a better machine than any of the other brands.

While I know many love BERNINA (B880SE which I call a door stop) I noticed nothing was mentioned about BabyLock, Brother or Viking probably other brands were not mentioned also. I think above all the reason machines do not get the recognition is dealer communication. The cost of this machine was 16,000.00 which I paid 14k. I even bought several extras and used 10 times. I would sell in a heartbeat for the right price.
I like the Juki, Janome, the antique Singer the woosh! serger. I would give a thumbs down on the BERNINA and the snobbiness that goes with.

They do mention the Brother Pacesetter as the best upgrade machine.

No way! My Juki 2010 is hands down the best machine ever! It is a workhorse! Strong, heavy, and fast. No fans y stitches, but man can it fly. I love it!

I'd rather have a second hand BERNINA than any of the others brand new.

Having owned several brands, including Janome, Kenmore, Singer and BERNINA, I would agree that it appears the reviewers were keeping price in the back of their minds. While my Janome was and is a great machine, it doesn't hold a candle to my BERNINA 570 or 790. The 790 can easily handle multiple layers including sewing patches on leather motorcycle vests. Did Kenmore not rate because the line is no more? It was also a wonderful machine when I began sewing in the '60's. It should have gotten a nod somewhere in the review.
