Capt'n John's Cute Cactus Conundrum

Capt'n John saw a plant called a "Ric Rac Cactus". He loved the plant and that it had that ric rac look so he ran to Alden Lane Nursery and got one. Alex has loved the plant and mentioned it on her LIVE recently. Then it turned out in the chat that the cactus has a lot of names. What other names does it have?

The cactus, or Epiphyllum anguliger, is known by many names: Fishbone Cactus, Zigzag Cactus, Moon Cactus, Queen of the Night, and Ric Rac Orchid Cactus.

Whatever it is called, Capt'n John and Alex have loved it and it takes almost no care.

I purchased a little one from a local nursery & while it had the correct species name on it, they called it a zipper cactus. It’s easy to grow & like my Christmas cactus, it needs little care. A lovely plant for my kitchen window.

Google shows it as a fishbone cactus.

This plant is an orchid cactus (family of succulents). It is related to the Christmas cactus.

The latin name is Epiphyllum anguliger. There are several orchid cactuses that look very similiar and actually have the same common name.

Your plant looks gorgeous. Every few years, it should bloom (the flowers will most likely be white but it may surprise you). After it blooms, transplant it to a slightly larger pot.

I've heard this cactus also called the 'zipper' cactus. It's foliage is fascinating.
