Kristin's Amazing Quilted Coat
One of the hardworking members of our TQS team was on the set for Sandra Johnson's show. Kristin was quite inspired to make her own quilted coat. Here you can see the results and get some great tips from Kristin if you decide you want to make your own.
A few things you should know:
Kristin bought the quilt in an online auction and modified this pattern: Grainline Studio's Tamarack Jacket Pattern
Here are some of Kristin's tips:
1. I think the best place to buy a quilt is a flea market- you can see the quilts in person and for at least for me, it would have been *much* cheaper. Plus flea marketing is such a fun way to spend a day! (Unfortunately our flea market is closed due to Covid, so I had to buy online.)
2. Know what pattern you want to use before you shop for a quilt so you can be sure to buy a quilt that is large enough. Also, keep in mind that if you buy the sort of quilt where you may want to match the pattern across your coat pieces (hello double wedding ring) you will need a larger quilt to fussy cut. I turned my quilt on the diagonal and fussy cut it to make sure the rings matched across the front and that the overall pattern placement was how I wanted it, and my 78 x 64 inch quilt was just the right size for my coat.
3. Unless you are willing to do some quilting before you start, make sure you are buying a completed (quilted) quilt if you are shopping online. Some of the "quilts" on the sites I looked at were quilt tops but weren't listed that way- probably because the people listing them didn't know that there is a difference. Look at the pictures carefully!
