Show 2711: Lynn Koolish / Pokey Bolton

Featuring: Lynn Koolish / Pokey Bolton

Posts On: November 15, 2020

Lynn Koolish takes the fear out of Fabric Dyeing and Shibori as she demonstrates both techniques to Alex. It’s Dyeing 101 as she shows you all the tools you need to get started, including the types of dye and items you can find around the house to use, including rubber bands, ropes, and PVC pipe. Lynn also talks about how the Japanese style of flower arranging, known as Ikebana, has influenced her quilting.

Then Pokey Bolton arrives in her Airstream Trailer, Maybel, to talk about her varied career with Quilting Arts and Craft Napa. Pokey teaches Alex how to do sun printing (cyanotype printing) and how easy it is to use the Applipops circle templates for appliqué.

From Chapter One:

Alex sits down to talk with Lynn Koolish, who has been quilting for 30 years and was a C&T editor for 20 years. Lynn is known for surface design and creating her own fabrics, with her philosophy being to be happy with your own work and not worry about what others think.

From Chapter Two:

Lynn takes the fear out of fabric dyeing as she demonstrates the basics of the craft. She shows you all the tools you need to get started, including the types of dye and the different ways you can use them in both traditional and modern quilts.

From Chapter Three:

Now that you’ve got down the basics of fabric dyeing, Lynn shows you all the tools you need to get started with Shibori, which is a manual resist technique.

From Chapter Four:

Alex visits with Pokey Bolton and her Airstream trailer, Maybel. It's here where Pokey teaches Alex how to do sun printing (cyanotype printing) and how easy it is to use the Applipops circle templates for appliqué.

After Set:

Lynn talks to Alex about her interest in Ikebana, a Japanese style of flower arranging, which she started doing over 30 years ago. She learned from a "non-traditional" teacher, and it has helped her in quilting as she has learned about symmetry, balance, and negative space.

Great show. I received some applipops for Christmas and have made lots of circles. Now I would like to fuse them to the background and wondered how to do this.

Fantastic show! Thanks to Lynn for providing the PDF handout, this looks super doable.

Pokey, I adore you, but your too-loose mask was driving me nuts! Defeats the purpose of wearing one. But you're still awesome :)

This was fun! I hope to see more dyeing in the future. I don't see where the download is for dye recipes. Thanks.

Great show! I'm also a fabric dyer and it brings me joy. I can only do it outside --or so I thought-- but I live in an apartment. Now I will try to do this soon. Thanks!

GREAT SHOW!!! I love all the fun techniques! Hey everybody - Lynn is a WONDERFUL teacher! I had SO much fun in her dyeing with resists class up in Sisters, Oregon! I HIGHLY recommend her! And thank you, Pokey - I want to run out and get some of that cyanotype paper to try sun prints!
