Show 2401: Becky Goldsmith - BOM 2019 - "Sizzle" (In English, Spanish & Russian)

Featuring: Becky Goldsmith

Posts On: December 30, 2018

Alex and Ricky welcome back Becky Goldsmith to catch up and see what she’s been working on. Although known for handwork, she wanted to do something different for a change. An antique bullseye quilt she’d seen 30 years ago kept nagging her. It was a challenge to figure out how to make the piece using foundation piecing. Once the puzzle was solved, she was off and running making several bullseye quilts in a row.

Becky has also been selected as the 2019 BOM quilt designer. Her quilt, Sizzle, contains a combination of foundation-pieced circular designs with a touch of her signature appliqué.

In this show, Becky walks you through the fundamentals of the 2019 BOM and the building of a Bullseye quilt.

I love hand applique and EPP, but since it was Becky Goldsmith I had to try this BOM. Love it! Paper piecing is not my thing, and I have to check twice and cut once, but her tips and advice, not to mention the videos, really helps and I am having no problem. Love the pattern and design, and having fun picking my fabrics and putting this one together.

Just a couple of notations--the numbers on the diamonds and the wedge correspond to the Block 1 fabric cutting instructions, #1 on the Diamond is the # 1 Lapis 2" x 5 1/2" on the cutting instructions and so forth & so on (hope that makes sense). I found that removing the vellum from the seam allowance is made a little easier if the vellum is folded back and the point of a seam ripper is run under the fold, it makes it easier to pull off and less tweezering.

If you use the Carol Doak method of attaching an Add-a-quarter (or -eighth) ruler to your card and trimming, you're not always searching for one or the other. It also helps you not forget to add the seam allowance and prevents you from slicing your card. Also, I like to use a thinner paper than vellum, like tracing paper. For me, vellum takes up too much room underneath the stitches and when joining sections, causing loose stitches when removed. Just suggestions. Everyone has their own preferences so should figure out what works best for them. Foundation piecing is my absolute favorite method of piecing. I love all the information I get from The Quit Show. My membership is one of my best investments.

Is there any reason we can’t buy the pattern only? I’d like to try my own colour way, and buying the bulky kit is costly for international viewers.

paloma01, I sent you an email with information to answer your question. And a link to my blog that shows how to match up your fabrics with the names of the fabrics in the Cool Kit.

Terrific patterns and wonderful color combinations. I am going to love making this.
I cut all the pieces for block number 1 (cool colorway).
Boy, did I get confused when placing the fabrics on the diamond paper pattern. The pattern pieces are labeled light, medium and dark but the designations do not correspond to the colors that were cut or to the picture of the assembled block.
In the "Construct the Block" section of the instructions there is a note, "The values in parentheses on the foundation paper-pieces may not match the values of the fabric in the Cool Colorway." I still spent quite a bit of time headscratching. I'm probably not the only one.
Perhaps a picture of the completed diamonds for the cool colorway might help?
