Show 2012 - Modern Scrappy Quilts

Featuring: Gyleen Fitzgerald

Posts On: June 4, 2017

Trailer

Sometimes the catalyst for a totally new direction in quilting simply comes down to vacation photos. Building a design using the fundamental shape of a square became the inspiration for Gyleen’s venture into the Modern world. But Gyleen, as always, has made the process more streamlined and completely her own. Using a grid system that allows you, the quilter, to design anything you like using basic building blocks that play well together. But wait there’s more. Gyleen even shares a fast and calculating way for you to make an interesting and unique quilt back using your stash. That leaves money for new fun fabrics. She’s a gal after any quilter’s heart.

From Chapter One:

Gyleen was a previous guest (909 & 1403) and is back to share what’s been doing lately. Including how her concept from a book grew from photos she took while on a vacation in Europre. We take a look at some of Gyleen's latest quilts.

From Chapter Two:

Gyleen explains the block system where everything is based on 9”. The three base elements (brick, cobblestone, pebble) can be sub joined but still play well together. She then shares a technique for sewing a pieced triangle using fabric squares. This method avoids the need for making triangles and is faster, easier, and more accurate.

From Chapter Three:

Gyleen shows you how easy it is to build a perfect pinwheel (with spinning seams) using only three pins.

From Chapter Four:

Gyleen talks about quilt backs. She pieces her backs to have more fun on both sides and creates an unexpected surprise for the viewer. It also helps you use up your stash. Her method for creating interesting and easy designs using a fat quarter and a 15" square ruler will astound you.

I have one of Gyleen's books and enjoy it. I found her free pattern. But where is the free information on her pieced backing that she mentioned during her show. I thought it looked very nice.

Gyleen spoke at our quilt guild, Ohio Valley Quilt Guild, and she was one of the funniest, most entertaining, and informative speakers we have ever had!

Love Gyleen also. I have always been inspired by her creativity! I used to watch her on "Simply Quilts". I am going to use the quilt back piecing, great idea! Thank you for such a wonderful show.
