Show 2006 - Engaging the Viewer with Line, Shape, and Gesture

Featuring: Ann P. Shaw / Rosalie Dace

Posts On: March 12, 2017

Have you ever wondered why some quilts draw you in for a closer look? It is through the use of line, shape and unusual or often overlooked fabrics, that Ann P. Shaw unlocks the mystery of adding 'gesture' to her quilts. A former student of Ruth McDowell, Ann took over thirty classes and now, with Ruth's blessing, is taking this technique and adding her own unique spin on the process.

Rosalie Dace takes us on a walk in Sisters, OR, and opens our eyes to seeing line and shape in the world around us.

Rosalie Dace

From Chapter One:

Ann P. Shaw began quilting in the 70s with a focus on Amish quilts, but soon became drawn to the work of Ruth McDowell. She took over thirty classes with Ruth, and is now taking this style and adding her own spin on the process. Her work can be recognized by subject matter, whimsy and use of unusual fabric combinations. She loves including asymmetrical borders to add interest. We look at her quilts.

From Chapter Two:

Ann shows us how to work with unusual fabrics and freezer paper templates.

From Chapter Three:

Using photos, Ann demystifies how to create gestures using lines and shapes when composing a pattern.

From Chapter Four:

TQS caught up with South African quilter Rosalie Dace in Sisters, OR. She takes us on a walk and opens our eyes to seeing line and shape in the world around us.

After Set:

Ann talks about her previous job as a college professor of biological anthropology and working on archaelogical digs.

Ann Shaw was amazing - the way she broke down and explained gesture was the work of a very talented quilter *and teacher*!!! Thank you Ann!

Great show! Loved Ann's style and her fabricology of colour testing I found this very unique. Can't wait to try her style out very soon. Her doggy & chicken quilts are very delightful and would make great christmas gifts. Thank you so much for another fabulous show! Might have to check Ann's web page out to see if I can purchase the patterns! sarah21
