Show 1811 - Row by Row

Featuring: Janet Lutz

Posts On: May 22, 2016

If you haven’t yet experienced the Row by Row phenomenon, it’s time to get on board! Quilt shop owner Janet Lutz started it all with a free horizontal row pattern in a summer vacation theme, which could then be combined with similar row patterns from other shops. Like a Shop Hop, you gather free patterns and then personalize your quilt with creative row placement, fabric combinations, and embellishments. Janet demos both the use of fabric plates, and creating appliqué letters with freezer paper. TQS then visits Eileen Williams, who has challenged herself to make a small quilt each day for an entire year. Known for her beach and seascape quilts, Eileen shows how to add shimmer and sand, using Angelina fibers.

Janet Lutz (Row by Row)

Eileen Williams (Eileen Fiber Art Quilts)

From Chapter One

Janet Lutz explains to Ricky & Alex how she started the Row by Row Experience and how it has grown over the years.

From Chapter Two

Janet then let's you know how to obtain your “free pattern” for the Row by Row and how to purchase a kit to make your own Row by Row strip. Janet also explains how customers can win a prize by finishing their quilt and turning it in to their local quilt shop by the October 31st deadline. She says she used to quilt, but since starting Row by Row, has no time anymore.

From Chapter Three

Janet shares her love of genealogy with Ricky and she relates how looking into your family tree is like seeing all of the Row by Rows put together. Janet shares that the 2016 theme for Row by Row is “Home Sweet Home” and demonstrates to the audience how she does her appliqué using C&T Quilter’s freezer paper sheets.

From Chapter Four

TQS interviews Eileen Williams and discusses how she makes her mini “beach & seascape” quilts. Eileen lives in North Carolina on the beach. She collects the shells she finds on the beach and under the sea (scuba diving) and uses them to hang quilts which she displays and sells in local galleries.

Eileen shows the TQS audience how to apply “Angelina” to fabric and how she uses it to enhance the fans that she creates on her seascape mini quilts.

Oh Wow!! I recognize that smiling face in the Pantie Raid article...that' s Miss Terri at Mountain Creek Quilt Shop in Greenback TN! I met her about 5 years ago when I lived close by and realized she is a fellow West Virginian! Her "local" fame as "The Quilt Lady" in the HR Block commercial is how I found out about her. I had the pleasure of being one of her sample makers! She is an awesome lady!

Fun show! I love the row by row experience. Tried to gather some patterns on a trip last year. The gps gave us great directions (in Idaho) to a shop.......that had closed at least a year prior! :-( Need to go with other quilters to make the best of it.... Others don't quilte understand! I really admire the quilts made by Eileen Williams. They are beautiful.

I got the kit in Moab UT when visiting Arches National Park. The patterns and fabrics mimicked the colors of the rocks and arches there. I made three row by row quilts and gave each of my two daughters a quilt to remember our wonderful vacation.

I have been rowing for a couple of years and I love Janet's shop. Calico Gals is awesome. I live in Watertown, NY and she is my local quilt shop but because of row by row I was able to visit shops in Canada last year and met so many amazing people. Thank you Janet can not wait for this year will get to row in NY, Canada, and Pennsylvania.

Want to know more about the quilt hanging back of the audience. Some sort of strip piecing, but I would love to see it closer and perhaps know who made it. Yet another great show!

Fun show. Loved the design wall in Eileen Williams studio. How did she make it? What is the material?
