String
Quilt Summary:
"String" by Peter Byrne was made using the traditional Grandmother's Flower Garden block with a Modern twist.
- Applique
- - Free Motion Quilting
- - Quilting Ruler Work
- - Stitch in the Ditch
Description:
After hand-sewing together all the original Grandmother's Flower Garden blocks, Peter bravely cut them all in half and created strings of hexies. The strings were pieced together with white fabric and then pressed to alternating sides to make the design of String. Peter then ran the quilting motif through the strings of hexies to create an edge-to-edge quilting motif.
Artist Statement: "String is a large quilt that measures 80 inches wide and 88 inches tall and honours the tradition and beauty of English Paper Pieced, Flower Garden Block, but with an innovative twist and modern aesthetic.
The overall composition allows for a supportive use of negative space and clear view of the various techniques used, including free motion quilting, ruler work quilting, stitch in the ditch and topstitch quilting used to Appliqué in place and create the “Strings” of half flower garden blocks."
