Description:
The opportunity to be paired with a quilter from Poland was exciting. The fact that she spoke no English and I spoke no Polish added to the intrigue! Through online interpreter programs we were able to communicate in a basic manner, keeping things simple as it relates to the exchange project. We agreed on the colors, that it would be a traditional patchwork design and it would feature the churn dash block. The rest was to be our creativity and personalities. The thrill has been similar to what I experienced back in elementary school when presented with an opportunity to have a pen pal from a foreign country! I am amazed at the beautiful work of my partner and her family and friends as viewed on Facebook and Instagram. Over the holidays she shared the details of their holiday customs and I was struck by the continuity of their culture of which I was shamefully ignorant. Being paired with a partner from Poland sparked an interest in their history and travel in that general area. What a great experience to give/receive a quilt to remember this experience. It turns out that we were both worried about the same things - the biggest being, will she like my quilt? And we agreed that we would, because it is part of the experience!
