Chaos
Quilt Summary:
"Chaos" by Sherri Lipman McCauley is named for the all-over nature of where the paint landed on the quilt.
- - Hand Embroidery
- - Painting
Description:
Chaos gets its name, according to Sherri, because it's hard to tell what's going on in the quilt due to the paint dripping all over. She used some Thermofax screen printing on it and a touch of hand embroidery to accent the all-overness of the painting. Sherri adds the paint to her quilts, just like this one, using large gestural motions, and wherever it lands it lands.
Here's Sherri with more about her process of making this quilt. "The serendipity of the paint landing on the fabric dictates the direction of my initial design. Sometimes the impromptu line is enough to ground my design. At other times, the challenge of incorporating a line of paint into a cohesive design is a challenge that I enjoy. The process is an important aspect to my design. This study is the result of an intuitive action of applying paint on fabric with a syringe, combined with additional screened layers of paint. The painted and stitched lines come together to tell a story, leaving the interpretation to the viewer."
