Featured Quilt - Beautiful Modern Hand Work

Flying Log Cabin by Darlene Talukder won Best Hand Workmanship - Modern at PIQF 2019. It is easy to see why Darlene's quilt won, as she went through quite the process to complete it. She says, "I worked with strips from narrowest to widest in a rough log cabin. Leftovers from earlier quilts were used as-is. The striped fabric became focal elements and the two balanced "kites" remind me of Miro's interpretation of Mid-Century mobiles. The skinny strips of striped fabric are outreached arms balancing the kites. The quilt was made from my daughter's jeans, thrift store "britches" and similar weight stash fabric. The wavy hand quilted lines accentuate movement."

What's Going On Behind The Scenes This Week?

Take a trip to the set of The Quilt Show with our newest guest, Kris Vierra. Kris wants to take the fear out of quilting when it comes to free-motion quilting, quilted garments and finishing your quilts. After a show and tell of her quilts, she’s off and running to teach you simple tricks for trimming and squaring a quilt using tools from the hardware store.

Watch Kris in Learn Finishing Techniques and How to Quilt Your Garments with Kris Vierra, when it debuts this Sunday, August 29, 2021!

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Remains To Be Seen

image

"Remains 1: Hers" by Sue Benner

The entire surface of Remains 1: Hers is covered with mostly silk clothing randomly stitched to the canvas on a Longarm machine, and on top of the clothing are many sari strips as well. Sue's idea behind the quilt was not only to recycle the clothing, but to apply that material on the canvas in a very direct way.

See more of Sue's quilts in Learn Techniques for Spontaneous Design with Found Fabrics and Silky Surfaces with Sue Benner.
