More from the Quilt Alliance:
"This month, the Quilt Alliance spotlights the African American Quilt Documentation Study Group. Quilter and historian A’donna Richardson founded the AAQDSG to inspire understanding of the social, cultural, and artistic significance of African American quilts. The organization’s goal is to document, research, and preserve African American quilt history through data collection and collaboration with local, state, and national societies, museums, and universities. A’donna has been part of the conservation and outreach team led by Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) curator Elaine Yau to register and document BAMPFA’s collection of 3,000 quilts. She assisted with the exhibition “Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California.” In June, she led a documentation day at BAMPFA and invited the public to bring in a family quilt to be documented in the national African American Quilt Registry. A’donna is unable to be with us for the program, but QA Project Manager Emma Parker will share some of the oral history and video documentation that A’donna has gathered recently, and will be joined by Eric Galindo, a young textile artist who sought out the AAQDSG quilt registry to document his grandmother’s quilt story."
