SAQA and Textile Talks present at look at multi-talented artist Gio Swaby's first solo show of embroidered portraits, Fresh Up, now on display at the Art Institute of Chicago. Join Melinda Watt, co-curator of the exhibit and chair and Christa C. Mayer Thurman Curator of Textiles at the Art Institute of Chicago, for a discussion on the show and how Gio's "textile-based practice explores the intersections of Blackness and womanhood." Register today and watch when this episode airs this Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 2 PM EDT.

From SAQA:

"Gio Swaby is a multidisciplinary artist whose textile-based practice explores the intersections of Blackness and womanhood.

Her embroidered portraits are anchored in the connections she forges with her subjects: each portrait begins with a photo shoot in which her sitters are captured in a moment of self-awareness and empowerment.

On view now at the Art Institute of Chicago, Fresh Up is Gio Swaby's first solo museum show. It was co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida, and co-curated by Melinda Watt and Katherine Pill. Melinda is the chair and Christa C. Mayer Thurman Curator of Textiles at the Art Institute of Chicago, and she will join us for this talk."

This Textile Talk takes place, Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. Future installments are held online at 2 p.m. Eastern (11 a.m. Pacific) each Wednesday.

The video will be recorded and will be able to view later.
