On March 4 from 12:00-4:00 pm at the Jackson County Public Library in Sylva, everyone is welcome to come and see and learn about quilts in their community, from rarely shared antique and vintage pieces to more recently made quilts of all kinds. At this first event in the series, a Quilt Talk and Open House - history educator Peter Koch from the Mountain Heritage Center at WCU will give a talk about the unique qualities of local quilts and discuss the unique duality of quilts as both pieces of art and history and objects of utility. Quilt Alliance staff will give demonstrations of quilt documentation projects that anyone can use to record and preserve information about quilts and quiltmakers. Area quilt artists Jason Pierson and Kelly Sawyer will serve as interviewees for the demonstration and be available to show and share about their quilts after the presentation.
Examples of the Go Tell It! video quilt documentation project are below, and samples of longer oral history interviews can be found on the Alliance's Quilters' Save Our Stories project website.
We will have simple quilting and labeling activities available for adults and accompanied children to try. Resources on local quilting classes and groups will be available and attendees can sign up to document one of their quilts in the Quilt Documentation Day to be held on March 25, also at the Jackson County Public Library in Sylva.
At the second event in the series, the Quilt Documentation Day, on Saturday, March 25 from 12:00-4:00 pm, community members who own quilts and/or make quilts are invited to bring their quilts to show, talk about and document them. Area quilt artist Lisa Heller will join us to help Quilt Alliance staff demonstrate easy quilt documentation methods using simple equipment. Peter Koch will be available to help assess the pattern, likely origin and age of quilts brought in to share. Photos and videos will be shared with participants at no cost. Registration for specific time slots is available but not required. Register for the Sylva events here.
Financial support for this project is provided by South Arts, the North Carolina Arts Council, Quilt Alliance sponsors, and contributions from individual donors.
