Quilt Alliance to present free Community Quilt Days in Leicester, NC on April 23 and 30, 2023

Asheville, NC, Monday, April 17, 2023

The nonprofit Quilt Alliance and community partners will present two free Community Quilt Days at the Sandy Mush Community Center at 19 School Road, Leicester NC on Sunday, April 23 and Sunday, April 30, 2023. Everyone is welcome to come and see and learn about quilts in their community, from rarely shared antique and vintage pieces to more recently made quilts of all kinds. Attendees are also encouraged to bring quilts of their own to share and document.

At our first event, on Sunday, April 23, from 12:00-4:00 pm, we'll start with a Quilt Talk from 12:30-2:00. Quilt historian, certified quilt appraiser and quilter Connie Brown will give a talk about the unique qualities of local quilts and discuss the unique duality of quilts as both pieces of art and history and objects of utility. Area quilt artist Norma Bradley will be interviewed for the Quilters' Save Our Stories oral history project to round out the program.

After the formal program, we'll invite anyone who brought quilts to share them with the group. We'll demonstrate the Go Tell It! video project--an easy way to document any quilt you've made or own. Examples of the Go Tell It! video quilt documentation project are below, and samples of longer oral history interviews can be found on the Alliance's Quilters' Save Our Stories project website.

At the second Community Quilt Day on Sunday, April 30 from 12:00-4:00 pm, also at the Sandy Mush Community Center, we invite anyone who owns quilts and/or make quilts to bring their quilts to show, talk about and document them via photos and videos. Norma Bradley and Connie Brown will be available to help identify quilt patterns, likely origin and age of quilts brought in to share. Registration for specific time slots is encouraged but not required. Register for the events in Leicester here.

On both event days, we will also have simple quilting and labeling activities available for adults and accompanied children to try. Resources on local quilting classes and groups will be available as well.

Financial support for this project is provided by South Arts, the North Carolina Arts Council, Quilt Alliance sponsors, and contributions from individual donors.

Partners for the Western N.C. Community Quilt Days include: Jackson County Public Library, Mountain Heritage Center at Western Carolina University, Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual, Museum of the Cherokee Indian, Sandy Mush Community Center and the Appalachian Women's Museum.
