Featured Quilt - An Award-Worthy "Aurora"

Last week we featured Kyra Reps' award-winning quilt,
Serendipity, and today we are showing off another of her worthy winners. Aurora received First Place in the Wall Quilts - Movable category at AQS QuiltWeek Grand Rapids 2022. The quilt features "more than 3,000 dots that are done using needleturn hand appliqué. She also made a dress and shoes that match her quilt using fused dots." Unfortunately, we do not have pictures of the dress, but can still enjoy staring at the mind-boggling amount of dots scattered throughout the quilt!

Like with Serendipity, we have a video of Kyra discussing Aurora with Bonnie Browning on the floor of the 2022 AQS QuiltWeek in Daytona Beach, FL, where they go into detail about all the details of the quilt. Just click the Quilt Video tab to watch.

Recreating An Antique Quilt Block

Inspired by an antique Carolina Lily quilt, our brand new show has Ricky sharing tips for constructing an 8-pointed star and inset seams. Using freezer paper printed templates, registration dots, and careful sewing means this tricky-looking block is easier than you may think.

Learn from Ricky, and Rayna Gillman, by watching them in Upcycling Orphan Blocks and Improv Strip Piecing with Rayna Gillman | How To do Y-Seams with Ricky Tims.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Beautiful and Bedazzling
"BeDazzleder!" by Lisa Sipes

Lisa says that she taught herself how to embroider on BeDazzleder! with the embroidery machine that her mom gave her. She started to make it after she met Sarah Vedeler at the very first Quilt Market that she attended, in Spring 2010 in Minneapolis. It took her about a year to make it, after throwing it in the corner several times and not liking it. She made one of the borders five times, but it ended up being her first show quilt, her first ribbon winner, and the first of many other quilting goals for Lisa.
