Featured Quilt - Handi Quilter Best in Show Award at the 2022 Birmingham Festival of Quilts

Impresion. Tramonto en Venecia by Inmaculada Gabaldon won the Handi Quilter Best in Show Award at the 2022 Birmingham Festival of Quilts. Inmaculada says of her inspiration for her work, "With this quilt I have tried to show the beauty of a sunset over the Riva del Vin in Venice, trying to give it the appearance of an impressionist painting, blurring the real contours. I don’t know if I have achieved my goal, but this is the result."

If it were up to us, we feel for certain that Inmaculada achieved her goal. We also think the Festival of Quilts judges did too, as this is what they had to say about the quilt, "We were drawn by the light in to this market scene. The striking choice of colour creates perfect balance. We would all love to take this quilt home!"

Many of our Quilt Show Legends have taken part in the Quilters' Save Our Stories (QSOS) program from the Quilt Alliance, including Yvonne Porcella and Eleanor Burns. Today we are featuring another, Roberta Horton, one half of the dynamite quilting duo that she made up with her sister Mary Mashuta (both pictured above). In this interview, she talks about her quilt, Frau Horton, "her creative process in both choosing fabrics and turning these fabrics into quilts", and "her hometown's influence on her quilt designs, and her relationship with her sister."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Traditional Block Turned Over
"Kalina" by Candace Hassen

Candace loves taking a very traditional block and seeing what you can do with it. For Kalina, she took the Jacob's Ladder block, as she did with her quilt Whirlwind, and went to Electric Quilt and just started playing around by rotating the block and trying out different colors. All of a sudden, she had two hundred different drawings before she even started quilting. Whittling away at the drawings, she came upon the final design, a subtle and beautiful quilt full of pinks and reds.
