Featured Quilt - Best Longarm Machine Workmanship Traditional at PIQF 2021

Spring Meadow by Marci Gore won Best Longarm Machine Workmanship in the Traditional category at PIQF 30 in 2021. Marci says of how she put her quilt together, "A One Block Wonder made from a border print called 'Garden Square' by Kim Schaefer for Andover. Leftover border print fabric and hexagons are included in the back. If the back looks a little strange, it's because after quilting the first row, I realized the back was upside down. So, I took it off the frame, cut off the unquilted portion of the back, turned it 180, sewed it back together and reloaded it."

Gee’s Bend Is Fashionable In More Ways Than One

On Friday we featured a segment on how to turn a hoodie into a quilt. Well now Greg Lauren and the quilters at Gee's Bend have taken that concept up a notch and designed a whole collection of clothes using their quilts as the basis. "Mosaic : Gee’s Bend and Greg Lauren, is a collaboration between 14 quilters from Gee's Bend and Greg Lauren, celebrating the ingenious artwork by the women of this community."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Let The Grid Do the Talking

"Color Grid" by Cindy Grisdela

Color Grid is emblematic of Cindy's usual process when making a quilt, that is, dumping a box of scraps and start making improv log cabin blocks. Cindy says, "Many of my designs start out with scraps from other projects and Color Grid was no exception. I usually don’t know exactly what the piece is going to look like when I start–this one began with 4″ squares of bright Improv blocks, grounded with neutrals and black stripes. The colors seem to float across the background grid, which is where the name came from. Irregularly spaced vertical lines in a soft pastel thread adds texture."

What Are You Wearing for Halloween?

Costumes are a staple of sewing just as much as making quilts, and today of all days is when it should be celebrated. And here at The Quilt Show we have shows on costuming as well as quilting. Watch both of our shows with cosplay designer Gayle Schliemann (Show 2413 and Show 2503) and see what inspires you for tonight or perhaps next year. Either way, it's time to think about what mask you're going to put on (or make) and The Quilt Show is here to help!
