Featured Quilt - Best Wall Quilt at PIQF 2023

Another of TQS' valued guests has taken home an award again. Karen Eckmeier, previously featured on The Quilt Show teaching us about landscape quilts, won the Best Wall Quilt award in the Wall Quilt Competition at the 2023 Pacific International Quilt Festival with her quilt Sunken Citadel, featuring perhaps the grandest landscape for a quilt you could think of, an underwater city.

Karen says, "Creating this grand lost city underwater was a real adventure. It all started with one of my hand-painted silks that suggested water. I dove right into this fabric collage challenge in my Happy Villages™ series by creating grand buildings, temples, and columns topped with shells—finishing with the metallic schools of fish."

Last year Sunken Citadel was also awarded Kathy York's Judge's Choice Award at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Lovely Gift

"Barbara's Medallion" by Margaret Willingham

Barbara's Medallion is the very first quilt that Margaret designed in the vein that she is doing her work now. Its inspiration is Victorian architecture, having grown up in old homes in Upstate New York, and was designed as a gift for her sister Barbara, hence the name. Margaret used this quilt to develop the technique that she used to do her reverse applique in the process of creating this quilt.
