Featured Quilt - 1st Runner-Up Best Sewing Machine Workmanship Award at PIQF XXX

Remember in our Wednesday newsletter when we featured an interview with Janet Stone about winning a big award? Well, guess what? She won ANOTHER big award. This time her quilt, An Angel Watching Over Ewe, won The BERNINA 1st Runner-Up Best Sewing Machine Workmanship Award at PIQF XXX.

It is the twenty-third in her alphabet series of quilts, and she had this to say about it, "The background alphabet fabric in the center is called Lexington. My mom was born in Lexington, Missouri and I think of my mom as the angel watching over me. The motifs were inspired my antique Pennsylvania or German Fracturs. The Siamese cat is our late Siamese cat named Siamese. Machine quilted on a Babylock sewing machine. There are vintage dorset buttons from Czecoslovokia and some hand covered buttons I created. The angel was inspired by tombstones from the 1800's."

"Hawking’s Bubbles II: e=mc2" by Meri Henriques Vahl

While reading an illustrated version of Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time, Meri came across a photo of soap bubbles. In the book, Hawking descibes how there could be many universes, but like soap bubbles, you can't get from one to the other. With that in mind, Meri thought that image would make a crazy quilt. This is Meri's second version of the quilt, Hawking’s Bubbles II: e=mc2, with the first being made three-dimensionally with padding under each bubble.

See more of Meri's quilts in How to Make a Landscape Quilt with Figures with Meri Henriques Vahl | A Bedturning of Antique Quilts with Lisa Erlandson.
