Featured Quilt - Master Award for Contemporary Artistry at Houston 2022

Blue Basket
by Roberta Lagomarsini won the eQuilter.com Master Award for Contemporary Artistry at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. Roberta's quilt is an original design, inspired by the baskets in the book, Scrape the Willow Until it Sings, by Deborah Valoma. Using Deborah's quote, Baskets are like stories—if you listen, they will tell you something,” as a starting point, Roberta took off running and let her imagination run wild.

Roberta had this to say about making the quilt, "Inspired by California and Nevada Piute Tribes’ winnowing baskets, this is a deconstructed version to allow viewing of the weaving. The vibrant colors show the beauty of the rituals involved in creating the baskets, and a hand-painted background fabric suggests the seeds, leaves, and other debris that falls through the basket. Quilting is in the basketweave pattern."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: On The "Road" to Greatness
"Silk Road Sampler" by Melissa Sobotka

Silk Road Sampler, which won Best of Show at Road to California 2016, is based on a photograph and measures 60" x 67". Melissa writes about the quilt, "Where east meets west in Istanbul, there is a Spice Bazaar that has been there since 1597. There, surrounded by exotic smells and tastes, the vibrant colors of the silk road come alive. One vendor had so many ornate pillows of various colors and designs, it was like viewing an appliqué sampler."
