Featured Quilt - First Place Appliqué at Houston 2023

This quilt holds a bit of personal attachment to us as it won the award we sponsored. Coming Home by Lyn Keogh won First Place - Appliqué, sponsored by The Quilt Show, at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. This joyous quilt holds all the hallmarks of the Holiday season to come, wreaths, and appreciation for nature, and the giving of gifts.

Lyn says, "My original design was inspired by a dried floral wreath of gum nuts, seed pods, gum blossoms, and waratahs. The wreath was a housewarming gift from my daughter when we moved to our new house. The Japanese yarn-dyed cotton fabrics were needleturn hand appliquéd and embellished with hand-embroidered details and colonial knots using cream Sashiko thread. The free-motion machine quilting was designed to enhance and complement the appliqué work."

Peter Byrne Will Have You Floating On Air With This Technique!

Hooray For Hover Quilting

Peter Byrne starts off our latest show by demonstrating his Hover Quilting technique by piecing a variety of fabric units (Cathedral window, triangles, Half Square Triangles) that are appliquéd to a gridded sandwich, before being stitched and quilted in place. The raw edges fray during the washing process resulting in appliqués that appear to float above the quilt top.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: These Birds Are Cleaning Up

"The Birdbath" by Pat Holly

The Birdbath was created by Pat for a challenge where the theme was a garden party, and to make the theme her own she decided to add some crazy, fantasy birds. Pat stitched the background and the border is put on with a frame technique.
