Featured Quilt - Kathy York Judge's Choice Award at Houston 2022

The third Judge's Choice winner at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival was Karen Eckmeier's quilt, Sunken Citadel, which was awarded Kathy York's Judge's Choice Award. Karen, who has been a guest on The Quilt show before, wanted to inspire a real sense of grandness and adventure in her quilt. She says, "Creating this grand lost city underwater was a real adventure. It all started with one of my hand-painted silks that suggested water. I dove right into this fabric collage challenge in my Happy Villages™ series by creating grand buildings, temples, and columns topped with shells—finishing with the metallic schools of fish."

Learn from Karen by watching her right here on The Quilt Show in How to Make a Landscape Quilt with Karen Eckmeier | Quilted Garments | Home Tour Casa De Vidrio.

Vintage Color Block

As a child, Meg Hawkey loved to draw and make quilts for her dolls, but it was her husband who encouraged and pushed her to launch Crabapple Hill Studio. Meg's easy quilting tutorials show you how to achieve a vintage look using crayons and hand embroidery stitches that will give your work an added dimension.

For practice, Ann Myhre has created a quilt block where you'll be making a vintage style block with color crayons and embroidery using the techniques demonstrated by Meg in Show 2009: How to Use Crayons and Embroidery in Your Quilts with Meg Hawkey | Update Classic Quilts.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Floridian Fun on Full Display

"Floridian Splendor" by Michele Sanandajian

Floridian Splendor is a painting on canvas and the largest quilt that Michele Sanandajian has ever done other than a bed quilt. After painting the canvas and loading it onto her machine, she cut up a lot of sheers and her collage items, laid them out, and moved them until she got the look she wanted where she then stitched them down. Floridian Splendor provided a stunning backdrop for Michele's show.
