Featured Quilt - First Place Appliqué at Houston 2022

Cherry Blossom by Akiko Yoshimizu won First Place in the Appliqué category at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. This Hand Pieced, Hand Appliquéd, Hand Embroidered, and Hand Quilted marvel is certain to put a smile on your face, especially because there 640 faces smiling right back at you. Akiko says, "I wanted to create a quilt with many girls on a pink background. Each of them has various faces with different hairstyles, clothes, and suited bags. There are 640 of them. It took a lot of time and effort to gather and arrange the fabrics to make the background a pink gradation. I hope this will make you feel gorgeous, as if cherry blossoms are in full bloom, or make you smile and feel kind."

P.S. We just found out it was winner of the Viewers' Choice Award for the 2022 Festival Judged Show—as voted on by attendees. The $250 prize was sponsored by Quilter's Rule.

See What Wonders Await You This Sunday

Complex, colorful, and thousands of hand-stitched beads are Colette Dumont’s trademark when it comes to creating her award-winning quilts. Take a sneak peek at this week's show as Colette shares tips for making your own Lamé bias tape and beaded edging for a quilt. A dig through her mother’s button box led Alex to find fun and creative ways to embellish a quilt with button embroidery.

Watch Colette and Alex in How to Do Stained Glass Quilts with Lamé and Beaded Borders with Colette Dumont | Button Embroidery with Alex Anderson, when it debuts this Sunday, November 20, 2022.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere

"Abandoned" by Ana Buzzalino

Abandoned came about because of a trip that Ana took to Hawaii where she stayed with her friends. On one of their day trips, they came upon an abandoned sugar mill factory, and because Ana loves abandoned buildings they stopped to take a few photos. When they saw there was a piece of fence missing, they went in to take closer photos and discovered rusted pieces everywhere (rust is another thing that Ana loves). Inspired by the experience, the next day she and her friends got some fabric and rusted it themselves using water, vinegar, and some of the rusted pieces at the mill. Abandoned was made using that rusted fabric and its imagery is taken from that trip.
