Featured Quilt - First Place Pieced at Houston 2023
Prickly Pear by Susan Braverman won First Place in the Pieced category (Sponsored by TrueCut) at the 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. Here's what Susan had to say about her inspiration for the quilt, how she took a traditional design and made it her own. "The familiar New York Beauty block gets an unexpected makeover with scale and vivid color. The blocks are all made from the same fabrics, but dense straight-line quilting with different thread colors provides a nuance of visual variation and definition. The graphic blocks bring to mind the colorful blooms, sharp spines, and round shapes of the prickly pear cactus."

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Stringing You Along
"String" by Peter Byrne
String was made using the traditional Grandmother's Flower Garden block but crafted by Peter using a Modern twist. After hand-sewing together all the original Grandmother's Flower Garden blocks, Peter bravely cut them all in half and created strings of hexies. The strings were pieced together with white fabric and then pressed to alternating sides to make the design. Peter then ran the quilting motif through the strings of hexies to create an edge-to-edge quilting motif.
See more of Peter's quilts in Hover Quilting, City Landscapes, and Puzzle Quilts with Peter Byrne.
