Featured Quilt - First Place Pictorial-Small at Houston 2023
A Horse With No Name by Judith Phelps won First Place in the Pictorial-Small category at 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. Featuring a valiant steed looking as if it is just about to gallop off the canvas, Judith has some insight into this beautifully crafted quilt for us.
She says, "A Horse With No Name was made for a Name That Tune Challenge in honor of the song by America. I love horses, the song, and the photography of Christa Merk, who was kind enough to give me permission to use one of her photos. The horse was hand-painted on the fabric, and then the horse and sky were completely threadpainted. The quilt was made to be viewed from both sides."
Unfortunately we do not have photos of the back of the quilt, but that does not detract from the majesty of this quilt. Have a look for yourself.

"To Laugh Often" by Susan Lenz
Thinking about time, memory, and how you want to define yourself to the generations that will never know you, Susan decided to adorn, and name her quilt, To Laugh Often, after a quote she adores by Ralph Waldo Emerson. While many people think that Susan and her quilts are all about death, due featuring grave rubbings in much of her work, she really loves life and felt the Emerson quote really spoke to it. Since she couldn't find the quote on any gravestone for a rubbing, she rubbed letter by letter, from tombstone to tombstone, the entire quote on a big piece of silk using a black crayon.
