Featured Quilt - Best Sewing Machine Workmanship Wall Quilts at PIQF 2021

While it is exciting to visit the zoo and see exotic animals up close and personal in real life, you could argue that at many quilt shows you see just as many beautiful animals. That is, the number of realistic animal portraits on display at a quilt show will leave you in awe just as much as seeing that tiger up close (plus it's a lot less dangerous). One such example is Stretch by Deb Crine, which won Best Sewing Machine Workmanship in the Wall Quilt Competition at PIQF 2021. Deb's quilt depicts a magnificent giraffe towering over the frame and was "Dye painted on silk" and "Quilted with silk threads." It's not a "stretch" to see why this wonderful quilt won such an award.

Thanksgiving Dinner As Art

We love these images of how famous artists would plate their Thanksgiving dinners as imagined by San Francisco-based artist Hannah Rothstein. Makes you think about how they would design a quilt.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Modern Take on a Dresden

image

"Hattie’s Dresden" by Lee Chappell Monroe

Hattie’s Dresden is the definition of Lee's "modernitional" aesthetic, combining both modern and traditional elements into one quilt. This is part of Lee's "Dresden Period", and started with the idea of how far she could stretch a Dresden design. Lee likes to joke that it is her most popular pattern purchased, but not the most popular pattern of hers made. The quilt is named in honor of Lee's great-grandmother May Chappell's sister, Hattie.

See more of Lee's quilts in How to Make a Color Wheel Quilt, Perfect Piecing, and Heirloom Looks by Machine with Lee Chappell Monroe.
