Featured Quilt - First Place Abstract at Houston 2023

Swamp (Pond Series No. 5) by Roberta Lagomarsini won First Place in the Abstract category (Sponsored by Sew Steady) at 2023 Houston International Quilt Festival. Why is it called Swamp? Why are swamps so cool? All valid questions, and lucky for us Roberta has the answers to them.

She says, "FIfth in my "Pond Series," this quilt depicts a swamp, the interface between the pond and land, where often there are very cool things going on. In my swamp, there are decaying plants that form the basis for the next crop of plants, the roots and seeds of pond plants, insect larva nymphs, fish, and amphibian eggs, as well as oxygen and other gases bubbling towards the surface. Plants are piercing the surface, reaching to the sunlight. This is renewal and regrowth."

Barbara Black's Tips for "Homeward Bound" Month 12

Another Set of Tips A Month Early

Even though we released both the Month 11 and 12 patterns for our 2023 Block of the Month, Homeward Bound by Sarah Fielke, earlier this month, we previously mentioned that Barbara Black was only going to provide her tips for Month 11 at this time. Well as an early treat, Barbara has decided to debut her Month 12 tips now so you can get a jumpstart on finishing that top for the Holiday season. She says, "We made it to Month 12! It's time to finish the final border with a stair-step unit. Then your top will be done!"

The Quilt Show Puzzle: The Star of the Show

"Starring You" by Peter Byrne

Starring You is the first quilt that Peter made intentionally to go into a juried show. It took him about four months to make and there are about 250 hours of quilting stitches alone. It won Best In Show at QuiltCon 2020 and for Peter it was just an honor to be there.

Peter says of quilt “Working within a modern aesthetic, I limited my colour palette to black and white to bring attention to the large graphic, yet striking minimalist design. I used 90 pieces of turned edge appliqué to create the explosive star burst as it provides the greatest freedom of composition. The expansive negative space is densely quilted with a variety of hand guided quilting motifs and to highlight and add definition, I used a heavy weight black thread.”
