Featured Quilt - First Place Innovative at PIQF 2023

P is for Poppy and Periwinkle by Kathie Kerler won First Place in the Innovative category at the 2023 Pacific International Quilt Festival. Kathie's quilt is technically three quilts together as it is a triptych that gives a lovely view of the poppies in the field with "stems of False Indigo, which is the periwinkle in the title." The innovativeness that Kathie won for probably came from her concept for the poppies themselves. "Some will be more realistic, while others are abstracted. My goal is to have a sense of realism without being photographically realistic."

Most, if not all, of the flowers were hand embroidered so it took Kathie a considerable amount of time to finish her work but as she says, "I love the look and process of handwork, so I accept the length of time it takes." We certainly love the look too, and think the time spent was well worth it for the result.

Correction For Sunday's Featured Quilt

In Sunday's Newsletter we featured Velda Newman's quilt, Iris II, which won the Viewer's Choice award and Third Place in the Innovative category at PIQF 2023. We originally said that the dimensions of her quilt were 94" x 30 Feet, but we've been provided updated and corrected dimensions from Velda herself. It turns out the quilt isn't as large as we said it was, it's only 18 Feet wide. I guess Velda doesn't make that big of quilts after all.

Learn from Velda right here on The Quilt Show by watching her in How to Paint a Quilt and How to Add Dimension to a Quilt with Velda Newman.

"In the cutting instructions for the appliqué fabrics there are 8 Vine Flowers from each of the two oranges and 8 Vine Flower Tops from each of the two purples."

The pattern has been corrected and the new version is now available for you to download.
