Featured Quilt - "Lightning" Strikes More Than Twice
Amy Pabst has been on a roll recently. After having not one, but TWO, major exhibits at both the Houston International Quilt Festival in 2019 and Road to California in 2023, her quilt, Heat Lightning, has just been raking in the awards too. Just this month it took home First Place Small Wall Quilts: Stationary Machine Quilted (Sponsored by Koala Studios presented by Calico Country Sew & Vac) at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah 2023, and within the last year received Best Wall Quilt at the 2023 AQS QuiltWeek in Branson, and First Place - Pieced at the 2022 Houston International Quilt Festival. This quilt
contains 9,696 PIECES and "was foundation pieced on a 1947 Singer Featherweight machine." It just goes to show with Amy and this quilt that maybe "lightning" does strike more than twice.
Learn more about Amy and her exhibits by watching the short videos taken of them at their respective shows. Plus, don't miss Alex's chat with Amy herself from not too long ago where they talked all about her amazing quilts. (Please Note: The interview begins at approximately 9:10 into the video)

Ricky's Class Is Over, But The Showcase Is Coming!
|
|
|
|
Even Though Class Is Done, There's Still Time to Have Some Fun!
Ricky has finished teaching
his Portal quilt class, but that doesn't mean the fun is done. On Monday June 5, 2023, he will be hosting a LIVE showcase of Portal quilts made by our members. To be a part of the Showcase, please post a picture of your quilt in the FORUM under the topic, RICKY’s PORTAL — Final Quilts, by Sunday, June 4, 2023. (It doesn't have to be quilted...a top is
just fine.)
Haven't started yours yet? No need to fear, you can watch the classes anytime in the classroom and there are still some kits left with all of the fabric you need to complete the quilt.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: The Sea Is Calling

"Nereids" by Mary Pal
Nereids is a piece that Mary had made
when she was entering an exhibition in Taiwan, the theme of which was water. Mary's first thought when she heard that was, "Uh oh, I don't do water I do portraits." Upon reflection, she remembered she had received a gift of a mug with a woman on it whose head was coming out of the waves and Mary realized she could make that image in cheesecloth. And so, she began to make the waves out of cheesecloth and she sculpted the women's faces to fit into the waves. The title of the quilt comes from Greek mythology where the Nereids are sea nymphs, who "often accompany Poseidon, the god of the sea, and can be friendly and helpful to sailors."
