Featured Quilt - First Place Small Wall Quilts: Movable Machine Quilted at Paducah 2023

Hidden Gems by Gail Stepanek and Jan Hutchison won First Place Small Wall Quilts: Movable Machine Quilted (Sponsored by Pro-Stitcher) at AQS QuiltWeek Paducah 2023, and before that took home First Place Wall Quilts - Pieced Quilts at AQS QuiltWeek Branson 2023. The quilt was English Paper Pieced using 1.5" diamonds and made entirely out of scrappy fabrics from Gail's stash, except the background. The branches protruding throughout the quilt were done using heat-transferred flocked vinyl.

After Gail passed the quilt along to Jan to be quilted, Jan originally had a tough time having her quilted leaves show up on the black and gray polka-dotted background fabric. She asked Gail if she could do something to have it stand out a bit more. Jan then used some Inktense pencils to make the leaves appear darker and sprinkled some metallic powder on top of glued areas, which she then vacuumed up to create a shimmering effect.

Join both Gail and Jan, along with Bonnie Browning, as they discuss their quilt and all that went into it on the floor of AQS QuiltWeek Branson 2023 by clicking and watching the video under the Quilt Video tab in the gallery entry.

She shares examples of damaged quilts due to improper handling and storage.

An 1894 SINGER Sewing Machine Restoration

See A Piece of History Looking Brand New Again

NATRA Restoration discovered a SINGER Sewing Machine from 1894 out in the wild disregarded and ravaged by time. They took it upon themselves to restore it back to its former glory. "The machine, which was left in the henhouse, rusted and worn out, was restored and put into working condition. It was completed after 2 months of long work. Enjoy watching!" Click through and see a video of the restoration process which produced a stunning machine that looked like it came off the shelf yesterday.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Pulling Stars Out of a Hat

"Star Fusion" by Janna Thomas

Star Fusion was Janna's own challenge quilt that she created for herself. Tasked with writing the course description for her next class, and putting it off until the night before, Janna was in a bit of a bind. So she wrote the description by pulling some techniques out of a hat and then incorporated those techniques into a quilt that she needed to build, hence the challenge part, which then became Star Fusion. The unintended benefit of doing this was Janna used pieced sashing in the quilt, which led her to write a book about sashing.

See more of Janna's quilts in Tips for Borders and Piecing with Janna Thomas | Bloc_Loc Rulers.
