Featured Quilt - Over 20,500 Stitches Hand Quilted Stitches

Solomon’s Stripes By Ethylene Ziegler won Best Hand Quilting (Sponsored by WonderFil Specialty Threads) at QuiltCon 2024. It was Ethylene's first entry into QuiltCon, in the Modern Traditionalism category, and features "over 20,500 stitches", so it's no wonder it won the hand quilting award.

She says, "Inspired by an Anni Albers color study, I originally set out to design a quilt using only three colors, with the Kona Color of the Year, Crush, appearing in all of the blocks. The block design I came up with is a combination of two of my improv favorites - strip piecing and quarter-square curves. The fourth color was added by chance when I ran out of Crush and found a color in my stash with the same value. Hard to believe, but if you take a photo of the quilt in black and white, it will look like the 3-color quilt I originally had in mind."

After viewing the quilt in the gallery, be sure and click the Quilt Video tab to watch an interview with Ethylene conducted by WonderFil on the floor of QuiltCon 2024 where she talks about her quilt some more. This is also where you can see the quilt in black and white like she mentioned in her artist's statement.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: A Message from the Animals

"Dear Humans..." by Sue Sherman

Sue wants her quilts to present a message to her audience to care about the environment. She does this by mixing a profound statement, like take care of our world, with a little humor. This quilt, Dear Humans..., presents that message by having its animal subjects have their backs turned towards us. The quilt won The Superior Threads Master Award For Thread Artistry at the Houston International Quilt Festival 2022.

Sue says of her work, "The animals are sending a message to humans, offering their opinion about the state of things. If you look closely, you can see where the humans have filled the sky with their empty talk about addressing habitat loss and climate change, but don’t do enough to help. Wholecloth cotton painted with thickened dyes."
