Featured Quilt - MQG Excellence Award at QuiltCon 2024

Anechoic by Janice Reimer won the MQG Excellence Award (Sponsored by Modern Quilt Guild) at QuiltCon 2024. Janice had this to say about how she created the quilt. "Anechoic is the result of a doodle session that turned into a summer of foundation paper piecing. This quilt was a lesson in colour theory and pulled me in creative directions that were out of my comfort zone (hello bright bold colours). Each colour quadrant has elements of the other quadrants in them by incorporating their colours into the quilting thread and binding."

Sue Sherman Demonstrates Thread Painting

Adding Realism Through The Magic of Thread

Our brand new show features Sue Sherman sharing how thread painting within a wooden hoop on a domestic machine allows her to keep the quilt sandwich taught. She then shows how invisible thread, combined with dense stitches, can add realism to painted areas of the feathers, beak, eyes, and feet of a penguin.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: Good Enough To Eat

"The Cupcake Block" by Sandra Leichner

The Cupcake Block is a derivative of Sandra's quilt, Tea with Miss D, and is just a smidgen different than the pattern featured in one of her books. It was created during her "Cupcake Phase" when she was playing with different cupcake designs, and for this one, she wanted to play around more with it. So, the frosting on each cupcake is stuffed to simulate real frosting, it includes little chocolate designs throughout and more touches of design whimsy. Those touches were a way to show Sandra's students that you can dress up whimsical quilts and add different technical flourishes to them so that they don't have to be boring.
