Featured Quilt - People’s Choice at QuiltCon 2024

White Bubbles by Irina Timofeeva won the People’s Choice award (Sponsored by Ruby Star Society) at QuiltCon 2024. Quilted by Natalia Moskaleva, Irina's quilt was inspired by  Varvara Stepanova's 1924 Fabric Pattern and designed in the EQ8 Program.

Irina says of her quilt, "We are surrounded by illusions every day. This work is an illusion as well. You see blue triangles but in fact, they are just circles. This quilt made with traditional patchwork techniques does not look traditional at all. I was inspired by Varvara Stepanova, a Russian textile artist, who created constructivist textile patterns over a hundred years ago that look modern even today."

Please Note: When viewing in the gallery, the title of the quilt is misspelled on the sign that was featured at QuiltCon 2024 as "White Babbles". The correct title is White Bubbles.

Painting Using Thickened Dyes with Sue Sherman

Add Texture and Detail To Your Quilts Using Dyes

Working from her own photo, Sue Sherman shares how to prepare and trace a line drawing onto cotton lawn fabric that will then be painted in our latest show. Using thickened dye she shows how to carefully fill in the areas of the beak, hairs and texture to the black feathers. When the fabric is cured and washed it is soft, supple and easy to work with. She then discusses and shares examples of other animal portraits.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: What Is Traditional Anyway?

"Circle Play" by Jamie Fingal

For Quilt Market, the organizers wanted Jamie Fingal to design a somewhat traditional quilt that they could display. The result was Circle Play, which, according to Jamie, is as traditional as she gets. Once seen though, you realize that it does have its roots in traditional quilting as it features her version of a "nine patch" block. See if you can spot it when viewing the quilt.
