Featured Quilt - First Place Group or Bee Quilts at QuiltCon 2023

Sashes by Elizabeth Ray won First Place in the Group or Bee Quilts category at QuiltCon 2023. Elizabeth and her group members, including recent TQS guest Carole Lyles Shaw, put this fabulous quilt together sash by sash and the camaraderie shows in the finished product.

Elizabeth had this to say about the quilt. "Quilting feeds my creative and analytical soul. The quilting community and collaboration brings me joy and belongingness as it supports and encourages my continuous growth and development as an artist. In December 2021, Sashes was my first prompt to the newly formed Quilts Unscripted Bee and its members Carole Lyles Shaw, Chris Davies, Chris Simon, E. A. Cox, Elizabeth Ray, Ellyn Zinsmeister, Emily Lang, Isabelle Selak, Loide Wasmund, Sarah Goer, and Sarah Ruiz. I was inspired seeing Nancy Goodman's quilt, Peace and Freedom: The Border Wall. Inspiration used with permission. Each column of Improv components, made with 2 colors, uniquely represents its maker."

Textile Talks: The 1933 Sears Quilt Contest Revisited!

Two Quilters Open The Case Again

In this week's Textile Talk from the Quilt Alliance, Barbara Brackman and Merikay Waldvogel reminisce about their early sleuthing adventures in the 1980s, culminating in the 1993 book and exhibit Patchwork Souvenirs of the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. At the time of its publication, they had located 100 Sears Contest quilts, but not the grand-prize quilt entered by Margaret Caden of Lexington, KY.

The Quilt Show Puzzle: ZZZZs Aren't Just For Sleeping

"Z is for Zoey" by Mary Kerr

Z is for Zoey won Outstanding Modern Quilt at Road to California 2017. It was made for Mary's granddaughter, Zoey Rose, and the fabrics featured in the Z are from the 1930s, just little tongues of fabric that were buttonhole stitched. Mary put the fabrics into the pieced "Z" and sent it to be quilted by Karen McTavish. The only instruction Mary gave Karen when quilting Z is for Zoey was that it was meant for a book about Modern quilts with a vintage twist.
